DAF fault code P1496: likely components, OEM numbers and symptoms.

Engine protection / EGR or BPV control report code. This page groups every component report connected with P1496, so a mechanic can move from the error code to the relevant OEM numbers, defect symptoms and fitment checks.

A fault code alone is not a parts order. Confirm with live data, VIN, installed OEM number, connector and part photos before quoting or fitting.

Component families linked with P1496.

The same code can appear with different root causes. Use the OEM number and symptom pattern to choose the right branch.

Back pressure valve report group for MX-11/MX-13 Euro 6 applications. The same OEM number appears in turbo reports too, so this page deliberately exposes the ambiguity and asks users to verify by VIN or photo.

Top symptoms
  • Distinct lack of power under load
  • Severe hesitation during acceleration
  • Engine protection or torque limitation active

Symptoms reported with P1496

Power derate or limp mode
EGR valve stuck open or stuck closed in diagnostic software
Rough idle, hunting or surging at cruise
Black smoke when pulling away or backing under a trailer
Failed regeneration and high DPF differential pressure
Coolant loss with no visible external leak
AdBlue or NOx after-cat secondary faults from incorrect EGR rate
Power loss under load
Black smoke and EGR estimated rate too high
Aborted DPF regeneration
EGR position implausible or sweep failure
DPF differential pressure high after repeated short routes

Likely root causes behind P1496

  • Carbon and soot cake the EGR valve plate, shaft and valve seat.
  • Condensation and oil mist form acidic sludge after the EGR cooler.
  • Motor gearbox wears from continuous modulation and high resistance.
  • Coolant leakage through the cooler or valve interface corrodes electronics and accelerates sludge build-up.
  • Position sensor drift causes commanded-versus-actual mismatch.
  • Soot caking on valve seat and butterfly plate.
  • Diaphragm or seal hardening after heat cycles.
  • Actuator motor fails prematurely when the valve is stiff from deposits.
